The house of a rich merchant from Gyumri has become one of the most attractive and most visited museums. The museum is an ancient mansion, a number of houses, with which the "history of Gyumri", "life as well as local culture" and architectural features of the city are connected.
About the building
The famous house was built by wealthy merchant Petros Dzitokhtsyan in 1872. Four brothers originally moved from the village of Dzitokh to Western Armenia, to Alexandropol. The house was built of the famous Shirak stone, red tufa. The architect intended to build the house on a slope. The eastern part is one-floor and the western part is two-floor. The building was not damaged by earthquakes even in 1926-1988. In Soviet times, the mansion served public purposes, and for a long time, until 1980, more than 20 families lived here.
We invite you to the museum
A tour of the museum will introduce you to Gyumri's past and culture. It is worth seeing the vaulted ceilings, traditional carpets and other decorations. The museum is divided into two parts. On the first floor there are pictures of famous people. Among them are pictures of Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan and Jacques Cousteau. You can also see the furniture of the Dzitokhtsyans' rooms, a piano brought from Italy, the rest of the furniture brought from Russia and Europe. The collection includes contemporary art, carpets and handicrafts from Gyumri. In the second hall photographs of the old Gyumri of the 19th century and maps of Alexandropol are presented.
